Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album is a return to a classic sextet format and an even more consistent and powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. Its more punk-rock sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's improved virtuosity on drums, and an improved, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work was sharper, more intricate and less cloned earlier performances.
After touring to promote their album, the band recorded an Amsterdam live concert that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. A new studio album followed just a few months later and the band embarked on a long-distance tour to promote the album. During this period keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album titled Then Now. It was the first album by the band without the single track "A". The album also contained an previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
